PTO Minutes for November 14, 2019

In attendance were Mr. Sylvia, Dr. Bloom, Mrs. Kiley, Mrs. Corwin, President Sarah Wood, VP Kenda Coulter, Treasurers Anthony Greenwood & Heather Morkan, Secretary of Communications Trina Ruggiero, and assembled parents.

Sarah: Thanks to the prom committee on a great job! The mayor sent a check for $1,000 to our PTO. We also received a nice thank you card from Mary. Prom Committee: $6,149 was raised from the prom fundraiser. Amy Warren has an idea for a puzzle competition for grades 3-5. Proceeds to benefit the 5th grade class.

Mr.Sylvia: Big thank you to the prom committee on a fun and meaningful event for the community. Thanks to Dr.Bloom & student council for running the Veterans Day assembly. Thanks to Bruce Ayers for presenting a bike to Olivia Zheng for winning the summer race to read contest. Thanks to Bergin and Kerins families for placing flags in front lawn and collecting donations for our veterans. Unity Day when students wore orange to school was a success. BOKs still going strong and wrapping up in a couple weeks. Thanks to Mr.Miller, Ms.Healy, and parent volunteers. Mayor is still pushing for a new Squantum School. Hoping for approval in January. Canned food drive is going strong. Winter concert will be Thursday, 12/12. Sheriffs office is running a coat drive. New or gently used coats can be dropped off in the lobby. Monday 11/18 there will be a parent academy at Central Middle School for parents of children in grades 5-8…raising children in the digital age. Emails ending in Verizon, AOL, and yahoo are not receiving emails from any Quincy Public School email addresses. If you have an alternate email, please call the school. School improvement plan will be presented and posted online. Grades 4-5 last year after MCAS filled out a VOCAL survey which asked questions about engagement, happiness at school, feeling safe at school, etc. Our school had above average scoring on this. Chromebooks: we have 3 carts and we’d like to purchase some tubs of small chromebooks for the younger grades. Mr. Sylvia will check prices on this.

Anthony: We’ve brought in about $14,000 since last meeting. Anthony passed out his balance sheets along with a detailed sheet from Heather.

Sarah: Polar Express looks like it will be 12/13 as long as trolley is available. Tina Rychalsky has volunteered to shadow Beth on the polar express this year and take it over for next year. Pennies for Patients will run 2/3-2/14 and may kick off with an assembly from the company the previous Friday. Book fair will run only 2 days in December 12/9-12/10…this will run during the day & evening parent conferences on 12/10.

We will be giving scholarships to seniors from both high schools who were Squantum School students. Kim Wheelwright is working with guidance counselor to get gift cards to be donated to families in need in our school. Mr. Pic would like to do a presentation on anxiety at our January PTO meeting.
