These are Mr Sylvia’s notes from last night and although he couldn’t make it, Dr Bloom did a great job covering these items:
Teacher Mini Grants: We were very proud to have 4 teachers recognized at a QPS reception recently for winning two mini grants totaling close to $500. The grants will be used to purchase two document cameras and help to fund the popular after school garden club in the spring. Congrats to Rachel Bloom, Rebecca Cordero, Danielle LaRose and Jill Griffith
School Committee Meeting (last week): Squantum was invited to present along with 4 other schools across all grade levels about the various instructional technologies used in QPS classrooms.. 4th grade teacher Jackie Hourin demonstrated the EInstruction MOBI device to board members as part of formal School Committee meeting. The presentation was timely as the board was given copies of our October newsletter as part of general business at the meeting which highlighted school community and PTO efforts to assist in building 21st century classrooms. Thank you PTO for all the support in raising monies last year to purchase instructional technology equipment. Truly appreciated.
Winter Concert: The annual holiday concert will be held on December 14th at 9:00 a.m. and will consist of same format as last year. Students will then be treated to a concert later in the day so they can see each other perform. This will also include a sing along led by music teacher Jane Aiello
Polar Express Night: This great family event is also scheduled for December 14th and run by our talented drama students and 3rd grade teacher Marianne Salas. Details of the night will be outlined in a memo that will be going home in a week or two. We will also post his information on the website.
Tis the Season: Please save the date Tuesday December 4th for what we hope will be an exciting night at the symphony. We had 25 student tickets donated by a QPS business partner and parent tickets are $20 and include a food/drink before the show and transportation to/from Quincy High School. Parent Beth Vacca will be helping to coordinate this night and we will be sending home a flyer soon.
Kids Vote 2012: Led by the 4th grade Squantum’s GOTV effort was near 100% this year. We transformed the computer lab into a polling location and all students voted online as part of the national kids vote program. We also welcomed back some retired and former teachers to assist us with Election Day activities. President Obama topped the ticket for our students. The rest of the race results are posted in the main hallway.
Community Service Efforts: Squantum students CAN. We have been collecting canned goods an other items for some local food pantries these last few weeks. Combine this with our annual UNICEF drive (also a 5th grade math lesson) and a Halloween candy collection for veterans and children’s hospital squantum students are certainly working to help others in the community.
Representative Bruce Ayers: Visited the school on Friday to present a bike to 3rd grade student Shayla Gobba for participating in the summer reading program. This marked the 4th year Rep Ayers has supported literacy and summer reading in our school. Thank You!
Veteran’s Day Assembly: All students gathered on Friday November 9th for a brief assembly as a way to recognize and honor veterans. W were led b the 5th grade and teacher Dr. Bloom as students shared their own thoughts on what I means to be a veteran. We were joined b special guests Commander Dr. Brian Bloom who shared some thoughts as well as Representative Bruce Ayers who delivered a message from the state house. The 5th grade chorus performed patriotic songs and we were led in he pledge by 1st grade student Josi Oberton (her dad was in the audience and has served for almost 18 years)
The Quincy Elks: the lodge once again donated dictionaries to all our 3rd grade students. They are kind enough to do this for every 3rd grader in the city. Thank you.
School Improvement Plan: The plan was presented to the school committee at a recent sub committee meeting and approved. The full plan Is posted on the QPS website
Think Central: the first grade team hosted parents last week to learn more about the online components of the math and reading curriculum programs. We will post the Presentation on the school web page. Ms. Salas and Ms. Hourin will also be presenting this information as part of tonight’s meeting.
Recess equipment: just wanted to follow up on this request from an earlier meeting. We purchased just over $400 worth of equipment and have made it available to students during the 2 lunch periods. Thank you!
